Canal Tours and Nyhavn

Copenhagen is a city situated at the eastern coast of the danish island Zealand (in danish “Sjælland”) and the city has a lot of old buildings sitting along the harbor and an extensive network of canals in the old city center. Taking a tour around the canals is a lovely way to see the city from a different angle and relax while doing so. You can start your tour at many different stops around the city, but many tourists like to start in New Harbor (in danish “Nyhavn”), which is a beautiful old harbor with brightly colored buildings and small cafés and restaurants.

The Round Tower - Landmark of Copenhagen since 1642​

The Round Tower (in danish “Rundetårn”) is a 17th century tower. It is located in central Copenhagen and was built by the danish king Christian IV and it was built as an astronomical observatory. The tower is part of the Trinitatis Complex, with the Trinitatis Church, university chapel and academic library. Today the tower is mostly a tourist attraction and historical sight from which the visitors can enjoy the view over the rooftops of Copenhagen. The tower has a riders staircase that gently slopes its way up through the tower and leads to the top platform situated 34.8 meters above ground. This tourist attraction is well suited for wheelchair users.

​The Danish National Gallery - SMK

The National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) is located in the center of Copenhagen. The museum has an art collection of approx. 260.000 artworks with a grand variety of european and nordic art. The collections spans from 1300 until today and the history of the museum dates back to the 1600 century when the danish king started to collect art. The museum is a beautiful building in Historicist Italian Renaissance style, built in 1889-1896. At the back of the museum is a large modern extension (1998) to the building that holds the modern art collection. The old and the new part of the building are connected by a glass paneled walkway and theatre, in which the museum hosts Art Talks, concerts and installations. Furthermore there is a beautiful view towards the park Østre Anlæg which is a place to take a walk.

Frederiksborg Castle ​

Frederiksborg castle is located in Hillerød in northern Zealand and was built in the early 17th century. It was originally built as the royal residence of the king of Denmark Christian IV and is built in renaissance style with a large Baroque garden. The castle suffered from a great fire in 1859 and was fully restored in 1882 with help from the danish brewer J.C. Jacobsen (founder of the danish brewery Carlsberg). Today the castle functions as a historical museum and it contains a great selection of portrait paintings and historical artifacts. The garden is also very beautiful, especially in the summertime or during winter when the castle is covered in snow. Furthermore Hillerød is a lovely town with great shopping facilities and little cafés.

​Christiansborg Palace - The Danish Parliament

The beautiful old castle Christiansborg houses the danish parliament and hosts a lot of official events throughout the year. The building is located in the center of Copenhagen at the island Slotsholmen and it is possible to get close to the building and walk around the area and see the Royal Chapel for free. Furthermore you can get a guided tour at the palace - they have daily guided tours at noon (in danish) and 3 pm (in english), and they take approx. 50 minutes. There are a variety of things to see such as the Royal Reception Rooms, the Royal Kitchen, the Royal Stables and the Ruins - buy a combined ticket if you wish to save money.

​Bakken - The World’s Oldest Amusement Park

“Bakken” or “Dyrehavsbakken” as it is officially named, was founded in 1583 and is the oldest amusement park in the world. It is located just 25 minutes (by car) outside Copenhagen and is much loved by the people of Copenhagen for centuries. The Park is located near the coast and next to the beautiful park The Deer Garden (in danish “Dyrehaven”) and is surrounded by trees and forests. The amusement park is fun for families, young couples as well as seniors, because there is a wide selection of restaurants, pubs, music, theaters, concerts and rides to try. Roller coasters, shooting galleries, candy shops combine with old restaurants with traditional danish cuisine and entertainment. Admission to the park is free, but if you would like to try the different rides, you will need to buy a wristband.
